236The essay analyses the evolution of Italian regionalism from the Constituent Assembly to the present day, considering the relations between matters of regional competence and the influence exercised in this area by the national and supranational dimensions. In particular, the author notes how the regions were initially supposed to represent the seats for the construction of a political class at the local level: the analysis highlights how national political dynamics have influenced the regional dimension, with an inevitable reflection on the subjects of regional competence. According to the author, it is the division of competences between State and Regions based on subject matters that is no longer suitable to regulate the framework of relations between different levels of government, which are increasingly interconnected and embedded in a globalised dimension. The analysis then concludes with some reflections on the experience of Italian regionalism, emphasising the need to adopt an approach that takes into account the complexity of living regional law, based on the relations between the different levels of government
