The contribution investigates the case of the detachment of the Madonna Enthroned with Child and Donors extracted in 1852 from the external wall of the church of Santa Maria della Vittoria in Mantua and transported the same year to the Museo Patrio. Through the unpublished documentation preserved in the Historical Archive of the Municipality of Mantua, it was possible to retrace the story over twenty years (1832-1852), highlighting the correlation between the establishment of the political scaffolding for the preservation of patriotic monuments and the genesis of the museum designed by Carlo d'Arco. At the same time, the reconstruction of the painting's conservation vicissitudes highlighted the uncertainties and resistance that directed conservation actions in the city context, eventually leading the institutions to prefer the costly and complex practice of stacco a massello and conversely to reject the proposal to tear the painting made by Bernardo Gallizioli - in 1848 in Mantua for the first time - despite the advantages of the Brescian restorer's method.
