This article contributes to debates on ‘Southern Criminology’ by analysing the method of ‘conceptual hybridization’. ‘Conceptual hybridization’ recombines ideas derived, deductively, from the ‘Centre’ and, inductively, from the ‘Periphery’ to produce concepts valuable for both contexts. The article illustrates this method by exploring the notion of penal-moderation-as-spectrum, achieved by combining sociological insights drawn bottom-up from Italian penality, and theoretical concepts drawn top-down from penal literature embedded in the Anglosphere. This method produces a notion of penal moderation intelligible for Italy, but with heuristic value that transcends the ‘Periphery’ and extends to the ‘Centre’. The article further explores the pragmatic, personal, and political reasons in favour of conceptual hybridization, arguing that the latter acts as a means to disrupt the false universalism of the ‘North/Centre’, without insisting that we develop and deploy only ‘purely’ peripheral/southern concepts. Through conceptual hybridization, we can in fact achieve a nuanced dialogue between criminological ‘Centre’ and ‘Periphery’, which promises to enrich comparative scholarship while furthering the intellectual and normative objectives of ‘Southern Criminology’.
