This piece offers a contextual and comparative examination of the 2024 reform of the judiciary carrying popular election of judges, introduced by the former Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and the current President Claudia Sheinbaum, with the endorsement of their parliamentary (super)majority. The contribution addresses the rationale and content of the reform, alongside the comparative examples quoted in the parliamentary debates and the posterior involvement of the Supreme Court for the (denied) constitutional review. Finally, the authors deal with the misuse of comparative law and the risks related to direct election of judges in terms of independence and separation of powers.
