631The international legal framework governing food safety - the qualitative and nutritional characteristics of food products - encompasses of both binding treaties and non-binding technical standards. While the former merely oblige to States parties to base or to conform their domestic legislation with international standards, the latter define the content of these regulations. The paper argues that compliance with relevant international standards, despite their non-mandatory nature, can be considered as a viable means of fulfilling international obligations related to the progressive realization of the human rights to food and to health, as well as the right to information. In conclusion, the paper suggests that these safeguards and their harmonization aim not only to enhance the protection of human rights, but also to promote sustainable development. This is achieved through sustainable food production and consumption, as well as consumer choices and business activities
