The present paper takes as starting point sentence no. 16 of 2024, in which the Constitutional Court admonished the Apulia Region’s legislator for the use of the incorrect term «territorial sea» in regional law 6/2023. The Constitutional Court’s censure offers a chance to analyse an original and unusual profile, i.e. the definitional dispute over appointments of typical state relevance, transposed into the regional regulatory drafting. From the analysis of some precedents, it emerges how these terminological abuses punctually orbit around the concepts of sovereignty, people and territory, as constituent elements of State sovereignty. Therefore, far from expressing a mere formal mistake, the issue is brought back to the more complex competential dynamics between State and Regions.
