10The study of urban spaces and their image is one of the most fruitful research paths in European and international historiography. Territorial toponymy and urban odonymy, with monuments and places of memory, allow us to highlight how the past and its material symbols influence collective identity, the conflicts and representations that define it. Thanks to the interdisciplinary paths that emerged in the sphere of spatial turn and critical toponymy, we can broaden our research to the post-war period and the present time. The odonymic transitions contemplate a double process of removal of contested symbols and legitimization of new commemorative denominations. Although these are memories of the past that appear in different spatial-temporal contexts, the «post-war» periods and regime changes involve similar movements of re-signification of the image of towns and cities; in a continuous correlation between oblivion of the cumbersome past and new policies of memory aimed at renaming the urban map on a symbolic and material level. The dossier includes case studies that move across the European horizon, investigating the impact of democratic transitions in Republican Italy, post-Franco Spain, post-Salazar Portugal and post-communist Poland.
