During processes of transition to democracy, various policies addressing the past are implemented to seek justice for the victims of the dictatorship. The effectiveness of these policies largely depends on the strength of the social and political actors involved. Among the initiatives adopted during these periods is the removal or replacement of symbols, with notable attention to changes in street names. Street names reflect a particular vision of history and provide insight into power relations within a given political community. This article examines the extent of changes to street names associated with the Spanish Civil War and Francisco Franco’s dictatorship in urban Spain during the transition, as well as their functions and impact as instruments of transitional justice.
