Gender equality is a topic that has been increasingly talked about; it is only recently that the glaring imbalance in the field of place names is being discussed. This public heritage, where politics, culture and memory come together, sees the absence of female figures, with few exceptions. This conspicuous discrepancy should make us reflect on the historical and cultural problem that closely deals with our collective memory. The following essay intends to offer an overview of the issue and of the initiatives currently underway to reduce such a deep gap: with a view that reaches up to the present time, the aim is to reconstruct the women’s role perceptions, the gender gap in place names and the raising awareness of it.
