68The essay reconstructs the contribution of the Italian Constitutional Court to the realization of the democratic principle. In particular, after having attempted to define the concept of constitutional democracy, the paper focuses on the main jurisprudential orientations from which reflections on the democratic principle emerge. The most significant decisions regarding the right to vote, relations between judicial authorities and Parliament, control over the decree-law and the relationship of trust between Parliament and Government are therefore examined. The study also touches on the so-called principle of constitutionality and «free zones» from constitutional control, the principle of territorial autonomy and the popular referendum. Finally, the work focuses on the importance of a free and informed public opinion, with particular regard to the so-called controversial scientific issues. From this reconstruction, a picture emerges in which the activity carried out by the Court consists in giving a jurisdictional guise to the political-constitutional debate.
