This introduction examines the souvenir as both a cultural artifact and an economic commodity, tracing its evolution from the handmade mementos of the Grand Tour to today’s mass-produced icons. Through an interdisciplinary lens, it explores how souvenirs mediate memory, identity, and social change, negotiating the tension between authenticity and kitsch. The analysis spans nineteenth-century craft traditions – such as porcelain figurines and artistic prints – to the emblematic icons of postwar Italy and contemporary global markets, illustrating how souvenirs function as hybrid objects that embody the paradoxes of tourism: staged authenticity, national branding, and personal nostalgia. Case studies range from the collectibles of the Grand Tour elite to modern resin magnets, revealing their dual role as emotional triggers and strategic economic tools in both local and transnational contexts.
