355The article proposes the reconstruction and analysis of the events following Cavour’s death, which occurred at a central moment of the Risorgimento. The investigation dwells on the public perception of the event by collecting the opinions expressed by the press and the political world, highlighting the different attitudes assumed by the liberal party and the oppositions in June 1861. As the first traumatic circumstance of the young, unified kingdom, Cavour’s death makes it possible to identify some significant elements linked to the image under construction of the newborn kingdom of Italy, including the «invented» funeral ceremonies and the celebratory rituals staged in various locations around the country. In this context, it is possible to detect the first elements of the image of Cavour "Tessitore" that will have wide fortune in the circuit of national patriotic memory: an image elaborated with the contribution of the family also to prevent attacks by political opponents and defend the centrality of Cavour’s memory in the public life of the nation.
