146Between 15th and 16th centuries, Netherlandish artists used canvas for the production of light objects, easily to be stored, sometimes low-cost substitutes for panels and tapestries. These works, defined as ‘panni dipinti’, are generally presented as glue tempera on linen canvas or as a woodcut and could be made very quickly, proving to be absolutely suitable if the art commission had to be carried out swiftly. This made them perfect for the export; in particular, Diane Wolfthal highlighted that about a quarter of the surviving Netherlandish canvas comes from Italy, a proportion that increases for the works performed by well-known masters such as Dieric Bouts, Hugo van der Goes, Justus van Gent and Gérard David. However, the lack of attention to this kind of artefact has created confusion in literature: hence the need to undertake in this essay a research path aimed at defining the production of canvas paintings, overcoming some critical issues, through a reconsideration of the existing literature and of the lexicon used by the sources.
