Addante's research, discussed by Meriggi, examines the formation and political practices of a secret society – Le Colonne della democrazia – considered the forerunner of Italian patriotic associationalism. The study identifies an important matrix for the later process of politicisation that would characterise the Italian Risorgimento, although it should be noted that, beginning in the Restoration period, this process expanded in directions quite different from those outlined in Addante's volume.
