Historians of European and Atlantic mercantilisms have frequently underscored the institutional fragilities of Old Regime state formations. Adding nuance to this perspective, Talini argues instead that, beginning around 1750, the French imperial monarchy progressively reconfigured the commercial and colonial deputies of the Bureau du Commerce into a new category of «technical» and public experts, thereby contributing to the centralisation of economic governance in the French Caribbean.
