Network organisation was ubiquitous in the early modern period. However, throughout much of the Middle Ages, it was not the predominant method of coordinating business activities. Poloni argues that such organisational forms only became widespread among European merchants in the second half of the 14th century. Clarifying the chronology of this diffusion can enhance our understanding of the broader economic transformations that occurred in the late Middle Ages.
