104During her long and steady life of philosophical investigations, Silvana Castignone was constantly driven by a pioneering spirit. A restless demon spurred her to enquire ever new subjects and explore ever new regions of legal and moral thought, masterly pointing new paths to generations of younger (and devoted) scholars, and as a way of commitment to furthering the moral progress of civil society. Among the several new provinces she travelled through, casting her disenchanted and practical eye, environmental ethics (combined with animal rights and feminism) occupies a prominent place. As a tribute to her memory, I will provide an account of Castignone’s perspective on environmental ethics – the variety of humanistic environmentalism she stands for – and use it as a basis for providing the sketch of a human rights theory of environmental protection.
