This contribution distinguishes the end-of-life cases into three main types. In easy or routinary cases, physicians have to apply practices, techniques and standards drawn, more than legislation, from professional deontology, in turn dating back to the ethical common sense issued from the three great monotheistic religions. In hard or contested cases, besides, ordinary, constitutional and international courts must intervene, by producing decisions such as Italian Constitutional Courts rulings 242/2019 and 135/2024. Finally, "tragic" cases will be defined here in a sense nearer to Bobbit-Calabresi’s meaning than Atienza’s one – namely as cases in which the patient’s life is at risk of being sacrificed, apparently in name of herself auto-determination, in reality to neoliberal or increasingly anarcho-capitalist health policies.
