661This article investigates the solidarity initiatives promoted by Italian communism in support of Southern African liberation movements, particularly the struggle against apartheid and the process of Namibia’s independence. Drawing on archival sources, newspapers, and interviews, it reconstructs the relationships between the Italian Communist Party and movements such as the African National Congress (Anc) and the South West African People’s Organisation (Swapo), with a focus on the strategic role of the municipality of Reggio Emilia and city councilor Giuseppe Soncini. Within the framework of Berlinguer’s internationalism and through the efforts of the National Solidarity Committee with the Peoples of Southern Africa, the years between 1978 and 1984 witnessed a vibrant season of mobilization. The article explores the aims, outcomes, and limitations of this experience, highlighting the specific features of Italian communist solidarity in an international context.
