The essay questions the ways in which some Italian scholars of the first half of the twentieth century responded to moments of cultural and political disintegration, which called for an idea of humanity based on a kind of thought defined by the recognition of incompleteness, of man’s constitutive imperfection and defectiveness. These factors point to the human capacity for creation, to its inherent plasticity as a key element of a Bildung that enables the incorporation and transformation of what comes from the past. These elements distinguish a vision of humanism rooted in the formative power of man: a humanism that offers the possibility of building the past in the light of present. In this view, genuine historical sensibility does not lie in oblivion, but in the creative ability to identify what is useful for life – what is revealed through research and education – and to express it in the effort and tension towards the novum.
