Drawing on unpublished sources preserved in the Radio Vaticana archive, this contribution analyses the reception of Soviet dissent proposed by the station from 1957, the year of the publication of Doctor Zhivago, and 1991, the year of the implosion of the Soviet Union. It does so by tracing the three major stages of that reception: the 1950s-1960s, the dawn of literary dissent germinated in the USSR; the 1960s-1970s, when the pope's radio station devoted ever-increasing space to dissent – facts, men and churches; and the 1980s, a period of transition, characterized by the waning prominence of the theme and its gradual retreat from the station's agenda.
