386In the Sixties and Seventies, in Latin America, and particularly in Argentina, Catholicism played a crucial role in the context of escalating political violence. Not only were political ideologies influencing the Church, but certain theological ideas also served as the foundation for those same political ideologies. In fact, the state terrorism carried out by the military dictatorship (1976-1983) presented itself as «Catholic» and implemented a systematic, clandestine plan of forced disappearances, among other crimes, justified by a unique rationale: the restoration of a «Western and Christian homeland». This article examines the information networks between the Church authorities and the military dictatorship, highlighting the most significant revelations and the reasons behind the Holy See’s policy in response to the initial reports of the disappeared. Specifically, it investigates how the Vatican’s attitude and policies evolved as new details about the disappearances and other crimes committed by the Videla regime became known.
