372Is it possible to establish a right for the most isolated indigenous peoples on the planet to remain uncontacted? And if it is, what kind of changes would the framework of human rights need to undergo to accommodate such a right? This essay, addressing a question that recently sparked new and thought-provoking debates at a conference in Naples’ Federico II Law Department, seeks to avoid taking any position – whether theoretical, ethical, scientific, or political – for granted. It argues that it would be a mistake to hastily domesticate a request for protection that, once all implications are considered, proves capable of moving some important elements of our legal anthropology, starting from the usual divisions between nature and culture, facts and values, and the object and subject of rights.
