This work investigates the ambiguous nature of European constitutional law, characterized by a commitment to neoliberal economic governance alongside the promotion of fundamental values. The aim is to show the inherent contradiction between these two dimensions through a synthetic examination of the EU’s efforts to react to economic crises on the one hand, and counteract illiberal trends in some Eastern Member States – namely Hungary and Poland – on the other. The analysis highlights how this tension undermines the European project, calling for a rethinking of its constitutional foundations.
