Since the beginning of the Cologne Carnival, local and global crises have been echoed in the speeches, floats, and rituals of this event, which is now one of the largest carnival gatherings in the world. At the beginning of the war against Ukraine in February 2022, the Rose Monday parade was transformed into a gigantic demonstration for peace, which led to the definitive abandonment of the idea that carnival was apolitical. On the other hand, the deep crisis in which the diocese of Cologne finds itself is also reflected in the official and alternative carnivals as well as in carnival creations, performances, and installations (which denounce the inertia towards numerous scandals) throughout the year. The carnival spirit, derision, and diversion are applied on different occasions by different activists, targeting particularly the Archbishop of Cologne, whose popularity is in free fall. While the (ecumenical) carnival mass, celebrated at the cathedral in his absence in January 2024, was an opportunity to send subtle subversive messages by the many official carnival protagonists and the celebrants, the Ash Wednesday mass, celebrated by the bishop himself, was deserted that same year. In the 1990s, the diocese of Cologne still had the power to censor alternative carnival sketches broadcast on television. In the meantime, scandals, especially those related to paedophilia in Catholic circles, have become so widespread that anticlerical criticism has become the majority in public opinion and in the media. Unlike other (alternative) carnivals or carnival events such as the «Messe des Pestiférés» in Marseille, the criticism of church structures and the abuse of power is shared by all political circles in Cologne, and this dramatization of the festive takes very diverse creative shapes.
