518This article presents the response of the two main carnival manifestations in Rio de Janeiro (blocos and samba schools) to the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 pandemic that resulted in the prohibition by Brazilian authorities of the 2021 and 2022 carnival festivities. With its history dating back to the mid-16th century, Brazilian carnival would develop its modern format in the city of Rio in the second half of the 19th century, when a discourse gradually took hold stating that the carnival celebration is part of the national «essence» and that «nothing can stop it». Reinforcing this belief, for almost a century, wars, disease outbreaks and deaths of celebrities would not be enough to prevent the occupation of the streets by blocos and the parades of samba schools, reaffirming the narrative that nothing can stop the country’s carnival momentum. The Covid-19 pandemic, however, would call into question the primacy of this «carnival spirit». The cancellation of activities would end up resulting in two different solutions linked to two ways of understanding Carnival.
