After the death of Victor Emmanuel II, the peninsula was filled with statues of the first king of Italy. Based on a rare commemorative work, this contribution attempts an initial census of royal sculptures throughout Italy, reflecting on their political context of origin. Public iconography in the twenty years between 1878 and 1899 did not reflect dynastic stylistic elements, but crystallized the image of the «Great King» in his military dimension. Almost 80 years after the fall of the monarchy, it is possible to trace the biography of the sculptures. First exalted and then silenced, the bronzes and marbles were removed and destroyed in the transition from the liberal era to the fascist era and then to the republican era.
