Examines Garibaldi’s iconography as a site of political conflict in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Through monuments, photographs, cartoons, lithographs and illustrated postcards, the study shows how the image of the «disciplined revolutionary», employed to legitimize the monarchy, was countered in republican and anarchist-socialist circles by the antagonistic figure of Garibaldi as a hero of the people – a symbol of political and social emancipation that remained unreconciled.
