Exalted, exaggerated, and ridiculed, Francesco Crispi was a prominent figure in late nine teenth-century satirical discourse, both in Italy and beyond. His dynamic personality, his back ground as a Garibaldian, and his vigorous, authoritarian style of governance attracted the attention of illustrators. Based on a selection of Italian and foreign newspapers, this essay examines key aspects of his satirical portrayal and investigates how satire captured and conveyed Crispi’s leadership, marked by a pronounced charismatic dimension.
