The essay identifies the author, the inspirator, as well as the commissioner of a crucial photographic campaign that depicted the City of Rome before its radical transformation through the implementation of the 1883 Master Plan. Drawing on previous research as well as on unpublished archival sources, the article reconstructs how in 1881 German historian Ferdinand Gregorovius urged the documention of the areas of Rome’s historical center that would soon suffer extensive demolitions and how in 1884 a similar proposal was discussed within the City’s Assembly and eventually approved by mayor Leopoldo Torlonia. According to retrieved sources, engineer Alessandro Viviani, the creator of the 1883 Master Plan, was entrusted with the project’s implementation and Lodovico Tuminello, one of Italy’s most talented photographers of the 19th Century, was the professional who realised the photographic campaign.
