597This article examines the trajectories undertaken by post-unification Italian law in relation to "patriotic pedagogy", "civic education of the masses", the "discipline of sentiments", and the "government of hearts". The analysis is developed through a close reading of three works by prominent nineteenth-century Italian legal scholars – Ettore Lombardo Pellegrino, Lino Ferriani, and Giuseppe Carle – approached as critical and self-aware interpreters of their historical context. Particular attention is devoted to the tensions and controversies between jurists and men of letters in the process of defining the normative and cultural tools for governing civil interests in the young Italian nation-state.
