This article examines how internal contradictions within the concept of the autonomy of the EU legal order can be traced back to debates in early Community doctrine in the Italian context of the 1950s and 1960s, prior to the introduction of this notion by the European Court of Justice. It shows that these contradictions stem from fundamental theoretical and legal issues related to the inherent tension between the concepts of autonomy and sovereignty. These contradictions persisted in the nascent Community doctrine, which frequently invoked the concept of autonomy to justify the new "supranational" institutions and the discourse of a new autonomous field of study and social reality.
