In recent years, concerns have grown over the public healthcare system’s ability to protect everyone’s health. Long waiting lists and increased private spending point to unequal rationing of care, favoring those with more resources. This essay introduces the concept of unequal health and its measurement as a tool for evaluating health policies. It examines how health inequities – shaped by both individual and contextual factors – affect health outcomes, and how essential services (LEA and LEP) may differ in their equity. It also highlights the need for proactive, inclusive health policies and for integrating health equity monitoring into public policy evaluations.
