The paper aims to highlight the main features of the healthcare system in Apulia, which remains constrained by budgetary limitations and constitutional litigation with the State. In particular, after a brief overview of the legislative measures that have enabled the Apulia Region to be classified among those «compliant» in the provision of essential levels of healthcare services, the paper focuses on: I) an analysis of the regional socio-economic context and the main characteristics of Apulia’s healthcare organization; II) the principal critical issues related to the delivery of healthcare services beyond the essential levels of care (extra-LEA services); and III) the persistent spending constraints that continue to affect the regional healthcare system.
