The contribution serves as the summary report of the Conference and emphasizes that it achieved its two main objectives: first, to take stock of studies and experiences concerning healthcare regionalism in Italy, and second, to outline some perspectives for the further development of research in this field. From this latter standpoint, the following topics emerge as particularly relevant: adequate information flows to ensure hospital-community continuity (integrated care); involvement of contracted professionals; waiting lists; financial recovery plans; the central role of prevention; and the relationship between essential levels of healthcare and available resources.
