In the last few years, the combination of ambitious goals, such as the digital and environmental transitions, and external events like the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and tensions with the United States, has led to a strengthening of the EU Commission’s political dimension. This contribution attempts to provide some preliminary considerations on this issue. It is divided into two parts. The first part outlines the role of the Commission, its nature and its functions. The second part analyses some of the EU’s main and recent political initiatives and the role played by the Commission within them, to reflect the institutional challenges facing the Union. The main question, from both a European and national constitutional point of view, is twofold: firstly, where does the political direction underlying the strengthening of the Commission’s role originate from? Secondly, do the ambitions for a political dimension of the Commission, which would reflect a more general issue concerning the mandate of the European Union, correspond to a clear and coherent institutional adjustment that is consistent with the letter of the Treaties?
