Starting from the perspective of an ethics of care, this essay offers a critique of the ILO’s 2024 "Resolution Concerning Decent Work and the Care Economy". Despite the many positive advances of the Resolution, it seems to be a retreat from a more full-throttled request for state involvement in care provision, reinscribes the public-private split by embracing the so-called 5R’s approach to care, and treats the 'care economy' as if it were a subordinate part of life. The essay goes on to argue that the structural problems of the care economy cannot be solved through such reforms as the resolution offers. What is needed is to reconceive a 'decent society' that makes care activities and relationships the center of economic and other forms of human activity.
