The essay reflects on the constitution’s relationship with the future, examining examples of its different configurations from the late eighteenth century to the present. The «problem of the future» is then assessed in terms of its potential to contribute to new research perspectives. This approach highlights the relevance of constitutional experiences not immediately identifiable with the typical trajectory of «constitutionalism», such as those connected with colonial rule, dictatorships, or twentieth-century transitions to democracy.
