After coming to power, the National Socialist regime established the legal category of «non-aryans», based on Jewish biological ancestry. In 1938, the Italian fascist regime aligned itself with German discriminatory policies. The Holy See and the "Raphaelsverein" promoted escape routes for «non-aryans» from the Reich and Italy through transnational rescue networks during World War II. This article aims to explore these migration routes, analysing the logic behind the Holy See’s assistance to Jews.
