This paper presents three examples of discrimination procedures requested by citizens of the province of Ravenna following the enactment of the law of 17 November 1938. The relevant documents are kept in the «Archivio di gabinetto» of the Prefecture of Ravenna. According to Articles 14 to 16 of the law of 17 November, those considered to be «of Jewish race» could apply, on the basis of particular merits assessed on a case-by-case basis, for recognition of a privileged status that would allow them to avoid certain consequences of the regime’s racial policy, particularly in terms of property. The bureaucratic process of the applications shows how the Prefect of Ravenna, Agostino Guerresi, conducted the preliminary investigation of the applicants, and in hindsight reveals the fundamental ambiguities of this peculiar instrument.
