With only a few exceptions, the 1953 Trieste politico-military crisis has been the subject either of political and diplomatic studies based on civilian files or of military studies based on military files. In addition, all the works that have dealt with Italy’s military planning and operations are substantially based on files held at the archives of the Italian Army, and therefore provide reconstructions that are primarily focused on the issue’s land aspect. By contrast, this essay, based for the first time on an extensive use of sources from the archives of the Italian Navy, reassesses the 1953 Trieste crisis devoting special consideration to its maritime aspect. This allows a clearer grasp of the various phases and the actual severity of the crisis from Italy’s point of view, both in terms of its relations with Yugoslavia and those with its Atlantic allies.
