296The history of American communism is still a historiographical battleground among several scholars. Those who supported the traditionalist approach, consider American communism a foreign and un-American political culture; instead, those who supported the revisionist approach, want to underline the deep connection of the American communists with the American radical tradition. This essay wants to go beyond this binary approach, highlighting the complexities the study of communism needs in order to be understood in its historical context. In addition, it wants to emphasize the long struggle of American communists to overcome the historical, political and theoretical division among race and class. American communism has been inextricably linked to the Comintern and the Soviet Union but, at the same time, has been able to provide an americanized socialist, egalitarian, antiracist and class struggle-based political view to workers of all colors, Afro-Americans and women who wanted to fight for better living and working conditions and for a different kind of society.
