31Combining critical criminology and postcolonial approaches while firmly anchored in cultural and gender studies, my analysis takes as its starting point the “astonishment” expressed by the Italian Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, following the publication in October 2024 of the report on Italy drafted by the Council of Europe’s Commission against Racism and Intolerance (ECRI). The “astonishment” voiced by Mattarella becomes here the lens through which to reinterpret the circumstances surrounding the violent deaths of four men “of colour” – Alika Ogurchukwu, Satnam Singh, Moussa Diarra, and Ramy Elgaml – killed between 2022 and 2024 by law enforcement, in the workplace, or by “ordinary people”. Challenging the idea that the violent incidents involving them are exceptional in nature, the circumstances of their death are here discussed as the consequence of systemic as well as structural racism.
