463A key segment of the so-called “marble’s industry” is transportation, which, due to the heaviness and delicacy of the material transported, was essentially by sea. New archival documents indicate that starting from the end of the 15th century in the Mediterranean basin a vessel employed already in the Middle Ages to convey a wide variety of goods was adapted for this purpose: the leudo. It coincides with the “barchete de' marmi”, repeatedly mentioned by the sources, which are used by Michelangelo Buonarroti to transport blocks from the quarries in Carrara to his Florentine and Roman yards. This need induced the artist to stay briefly in 1518 in Genoa, the capital of a small state that, as can be seen from Michelangelo's correspondence, was of constant mandatory reference for anyone who had to deal with matters related to marble.
