737Selim Augusti played a remarkable role in the culture of restoration and conservation science over a period of time that has seen the establishment of the foundations of these disciplines in Italy as well as internationally. His work was carried out without interruption for over forty years, from the early 1930s, when he began his collaboration with Sergio Ortolani, director of the Naples Museum's Pinacoteca, by way of important milestones that saw him play a leading role in the creation of the scientific laboratory of the Istituto Centrale del Restauro in 1940, and the foundation of the Capodimonte Museum's Conservation Laboratory in 1957, where he worked until his retirement in 1973. Although several publications have outlined aspects of his activity, his contribution still awaited to be defined in a comprehensive fashion. Thanks to a review of the state of studies and important findings, it has been possible here to provide a more complete survey of his contribution to the sector.
