Adopting the methodology for the study of historical imaginaries developed by the university project Immaginare i saperi. Tutte le immagini di una biblioteca, this contribution analyzes the dissemination of the illustration of Claves anulatae: key rings used in ancient Rome to imprint seals and depicted by Justus Lipsius in his notes on Tacitus’ Annales. Lipsius’ European fame boosted their fortune at the court of Francesco Maria II della Rovere, as evidenced by the presence of Lipsian texts in ms. 50 of the Biblioteca Universitaria Alessandrina, previously unpublished. The illustration of the Claves anulatae appears in other 17th-century texts, most notably in Cesare Ripa’s Iconologia. A comparison between different editions of this work has revealed, in addition to citations from Lipsius appearing from 1613 onward, the role of the Claves anulatae in defining the iconography of the entry Secretezza, overo Taciturnità, which was later employed by various artists.
