On 14 December 1935, the Scuola Nazionale del Restauro was inaugurated in Milan, it was a small institute that had the ambition of being a national reference. An important role in the foundation was played by Renato Mancia (1888-1985), a curious umbrian person from Trevi, who had already been a sculptor, artist and restorer, a great supporter of “pinacology” as a science and author in 1936 of one of the first italian texts on use of artistic diagnosis. This paper investigates inhedit aspects of Mancia's biography and contextualizes the brief history of the milanese Scuola in Italy, in a time characterized by a close comparison/clash between those who proposed an exaggeratedly positivist vision of the use of scientific-diagnostic tools and those who claimed a necessary mediation with art historians. In all this, to establish the credibility of the interlocutors, it was essential to distinguish who had colluded with the thriving market of art forgeries.
