The essay deals with the study of the stucco ciborium of the Abbey of S. Giovanni in Argentella in Sabina, which is characterized by its highly original and completely aniconic decorative apparatus. The aim is to definitively clarify the controversial chronology of the work, which shows oscillations of even half a millennium, from the early medieval period to the Romanesque period, and at the same time to identify the craftsmen to whom its creation is attributed. The comparative analysis has led to placing the ciborium at the beginning of the 12th century, when in Italy as in Western Europe we witness the revival of the interlacing decoration of early medieval origin; while its execution is due to itinerant craftsmen, most likely coming from the French region of Occitania.
