Among the Einaudi papers (Turin, State Archive), the project by Cesare Brandi from the 1950s for a manual on conservation has been retrieved, which connected theory and practice according to an angle that was later lost with the shipwreck of the initiative. The finding provided the opportunity to analyze the author's plan, comparing it with the surviving materials from the lessons and the structure, between paratext and text, of the Theory of Restoration, which was published for the first time in 1963 by the Edizioni di Storia e Letteratura. This resulted in a renewed examination of the genesis of the work, where subtractions and existences combine with the deliberate process of speculative distillation of the twenty-year directorial experience of the author at the Central Institute of Restoration. The proposed interpretations, also measured on the level of intertextuality, demonstrate that, despite its great success in Italy and abroad, the Theory can still be considered susceptible to further exploration in many aspects.
