This article analyses Di Bartolomeo's book, which focuses on the reception of the French Revolution and the Empire during the advent of the French Republic in 1848. Analogies between the two republican periods could take on different meanings, but were especially used for predictive purposes, i.e. to foreshadow a possible future. Thus, in the eyes of some, the revolution seemed to be heading towards a déjà vu, a sort of a theatrical performance: farce or collective tragedy?
